A Sixth Part of the World is a cinematic manifesto from the year 1926. Its creator is one of the greatest “inventors” of cinema, the inventor of a new audio and visual language and documentarian of a changing world: the film maker and media theorist Dziga Vertov (1896-1954). Film for him was the modern mode of expression of a new world view.

In A Sixth Part of the World Vertov assembles documentary film material from the most diverse and remote Soviet regions. His film correspondents, dispatched throughout the country, are messengers of the revolutionary shift to modernity in the “sixth part of the world”.

The British composer Michael Nyman, known for his music to Peter Greenaway's films, wrote a new soundtrack to A Sixth Part of the World in 2009. Nyman is fascinated by Russian avant-garde cinema, in particular by Dziga Vertov, whose films The Eleventh Year (1928) and The Man with the Movie Camera (1929) he already set to music.
