The Sound of Insects – Record of a Mummy (2008)
Film by Peter Liechti
Music by Norbert Möslang
Sound by Balthasar Jucker / Christian Beusch
The Sound of Insects is a bold, intelligent, technically brilliant and emotionally deeply moving film. Originating from a dramatic monologue based on a true story by the Japanese writer Masahiko Shamida, the Swiss filmmaker, Peter Liechti, tackles one of the last taboos of Western society, suicide. The stringent artistic style, paired with Lietchtis distinctive sense of all that is deeply humane – the filmmaker associates images of daily live with the voice-over script in the style of a diary, sound and visual recordings from the crime scene in the middle of the wood, extracts of German songs sung by men, as well as experimental music by Norbert Möslang – allow this film about the depressing slow death of a man become a captivating ode to life.
