As the first comprehensive retrospective in Berlin, this exhibition – jointly presented by SAVVY Contemporary and MaerzMusik in collaboration with the Estate of Benjamin Patterson and Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden – reflects on the life’s work of Fluxus co-founder Benjamin Patterson, who passed away in 2016.

Amidst the uncertainties, clamancies and nebulosity of our times, we must still find space to intro- and retrospect. Or is it to intro-audite and retro-audite? Indeed, we must find space and time to listen in and listen back. This project is a deliberation on and celebration of the seminal work of African-American artist Benjamin Patterson (1934–2016). It is an attempt to unsilence, re-enact and re-interpret the extensive body of work of one of the founding members of the Fluxus movement. It is a possibility to listen at ear level.Six years after he transitioned to the greater beyond, it is time to take stock and time to commemorate Benjamin Patterson with a first comprehensive solo exhibition in Berlin. This exhibition will bring together original scores, texts, artworks, objects, videos, compositions and other archival material. The public programme will take the form of an invocation by contemporary artists of performances, concerts, lectures and film screenings On, Of, For, With Ben Patterson.SAVVY Contemporary, together with the Patterson Estate and MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues, invites artists, curators, scholars and co-travellers to reflect and revive Patterson’s work of five decades. While being based on a multi-disciplinary curatorial approach that stems from Patterson’s worlds, this project wants to move beyond Fluxus, historically and artistically – a play on and with time, an archive in action.This is a long term research by SAVVY Contemporary, which brings together works from five decades by Benjamin Patterson, including “When Elephants Fight, It Is the Frogs That Suffer (2016–17)”, commissioned for documenta14 (Athens and Kassel, 2017).In collaboration with Barbro Patterson (Estate of Benjamin Patterson) and Elke Gruhn (Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden). This project is the sixth collaboration between SAVVY Contemporary and MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues, with works commissioned by Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

In What Century Will the Earth’s North and South Poles Change Polarities?

With “Holy 204”, Egyptian sound artist Yara Mekawei presents at the daadgalerie her first solo exhibition in Germany. Employing a variety of “resonating sculptures” created with a 3D printer, she takes visitors on a journey into the mysteries of Sufism, a subject that has fascinated her for years, inspiring her research and artistic work.

With “Holy 204”, Egyptian sound artist Yara Mekawei presents at the daadgalerie her first solo exhibition in Germany. Employing a variety of “resonating sculptures” created with a 3D printer, she takes visitors on a journey into the mysteries of Sufism, a subject that has fascinated her for years, inspiring her research and artistic work.Since 2014, Yara Mekawei has been working on a translation system for sounds heard in the background of Sufi texts; she uses a traditional, cryptographic method to encode and decode Arabic letters in numeric form. In “Holy 204”, Mekawei works with Sufi poems by philosophers from the tenth and thirteenth centuries. Translated into combinations of numbers, these poems serve as the basis for her sound compositions and 3D-sculptures — a translation process that not only adds another layer of meaning to the multifaceted wisdom of the past, but also brings it to life for the present.With her translations and transformations between analogue and digital materials, text and numbers, cipher and decipherment, past and future, as well as spirituality and rationality, Yara Mekawei poses the major questions of ethics in an emotionally impactful way — issues that have gained new relevance in the present-day pandemic.

And still, they also find opportunity for contemplation in familiar sounds.

The festival commences with an immersive auditory experience, reviving a pivotal moment in the history of new and experimental music through INA grm – Groupe de Recherches Musicales’ Acousmonium. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of François Bayle’s invention, we will showcase compositions for the loudspeaker orchestra by composers such as Beatriz Ferreyra, Eve Aboulkheir, François Bayle and others. EnsembleKollektiv Berlin explores the realm of conscientious listening with works by Helmut Lachenmann as well as Michelle Lou and Ashkan Behzadi. The intergenerational narrative unfolds with Simon Steen-Andersen’s interpretation of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Musik im Bauch” performed by Les Percussions de Strasbourg. In this edition, we will continue our focus from last year on composer and artist Lucia Dlugoszewski: we have curated scores, including some unfinished ones, with Marco Blaauw and Christine Chapman that have been reconstructed by Ensemble Musikfabrik, rebuilt Dlugoszewski’s percussive instruments, and restaged works conducted for dance, performed by Berlin-based dancers in collaboration with Katherine Duke and the Erick Hawkins Company. Spread throughout the city, the series “Topographies of Hearing” features installations and interventions by Christina Kubisch, Jessica Ekomane, Audrey Chen and others. In navigating the uncharted territories of our collective futures, this year’s edition embraces the ongoing processes that are underway rather than fixating on conclusive ideas.We look forward to experiencing MaerzMusik 2024 with you!

MaerzMusik 2024 is positioning itself as an open-ended experience centred on conscientious listening, while also highlighting the constantly evolving tapestry of musical interplay among different generations and movements. With the ensembles, artists, musicians and composers invited, the festival examines the multi-layered potential of music through a programme that dovetails with the performing arts, sound, artistic interventions and more.

MaerzMusik will take place from 21 to 30&nbsp;March 2025 under the artistic direction of Kamila Metwaly. The 24th festival edition will open with the multimedia music theatre production “MELENCOLIA – A Show Against the Indifference of the Universe” by Brigitta Muntendorf and Moritz Lobeck at Haus der Berliner Festspiele. The work, commissioned by the Bregenz Festival and Ensemble Modern, will celebrate its German premiere at MaerzMusik in cooperation with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Immersed in 3D&nbsp;soundscapes, performers from Ensemble Modern and the Apollo Choir of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden take listeners into a deep exploration of enigmatic, melancholic worlds where reality and virtuality are combined on stage.Further multidisciplinary projects as well as current compositions for percussion will be presented over the following nine festival days: the new work “Streik” for ten drumsets by Enno Poppe, “POETICA” by Chaya Czernowin and Steven Schick for Les Percussions de Strasbourg and “Minor Characters” by Jennifer Walshe and Matthew Shlomowitz with Ensemble Nikel. In addition to the New York ensemble Yarn/Wire and the performance duo Nguyễn + Transitory, the programme also includes current works by Mark Barden and Ligia Lewis.Advance ticket sales for „MELENCOLIA“ will start on 14&nbsp;November and for the other programme items in mid-January. The complete festival programme will be published in February.

The international Jazzfest Research Lab&nbsp;welcomes academics and students to take a critical look at the festival’s archive, its programmes, creators, musicians and – last but not least – its myths. In two seminars during the summer semester of 2024, students from the Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Hildesheim have explored the festival’s history from various perspectives. In this film, the participants give a first look at how they dealt with their research subject.

Introducing: Jazzfest Research Lab

To mark its 60th anniversary, Jazzfest Berlin is celebrating the cultural diversity of the neighbouring district of Moabit in collaboration with around 35 official partners and initiatives and with over 350 participants of all ages.&nbsp;In June 2024, interviews were conducted with 20 partners who presented their perspectives, wishes and ideas for the Jazzfest Community Lab Moabit.
