The Gropius Bau hosts a Sunday afternoon programme dedicated to listening, gathering and embodying, with sonic performances that resonate diasporic sound culture, lost histories and healing. It includes a short break with a curatorial introduction by Zippora Elders to the exhibition General Idea.
Duration: 45 min
Alluding to a spirit of counterculture, self-organisation and collectivity, the afternoon starts with a sonic lecture by Raziyah aka Chinnamasta, blending words, sounds and rituals that uncover and showcase Afro-Diasporic sonic global culture.
Duration: 45 min
Nguyễn + Transitory (Baly and Tara) are following with a live-performance, channeling vulnerability, interdependence, closeness, disorientation and trust as forms of collective resistance.
Duration: 90 min
Animistic Beliefs are closing the day with a listening session that will turn into a DJ set. They will infect the Gropius Bau with vibrations of electro, punk, jungle and gabber.
Raziyah aka Chinnamasta, meaning the goddess of death, rebirth and contradictions, is on the quest to recover and uncover the cross-pollination of sonic landscapes and cultures between peoples, the post-colonial Afro-Diasporic sonic global culture in particular, through rhythms travelling from the cross-continental sonic routes of the Atlantic, Caribbean and Indian.
Working with performance, modular synthesisers and analog tape, Nguyễn + Transitory (Baly and Tara) attempt to approach sound, synthesis, noise, rhythm and performance through a less colonial lens – looking into how frequencies, the physicality of producing sounds relate to cognitive memories, stored emotions and catharsis.
The Rotterdam duo Animistic Beliefs celebrates all facets of their identity: punk, queer and Southeast Asian. The approach of Linh Luu and Marvin Lalihatu is both deeply personal and politically resonant. Drawing inspiration from Animism, they explore the spiritual essence in all things.
The Resonance Room will be open for walk-ins throughout the afternoon. Before, during and after the programme there will be opportunities to visit the exhibition General Idea (9/6 €). The resonance room has possibilities to stand, sit, lay down and dance. The space is wheelchair accessible.
