As part of the opening week of Rirkrit Tiravanija’s exhibition DAS GLÜCK IST NICHT IMMER LUSTIG, Karl Holmqvist reads from his new book of poetry OCEAN’S 24/7ELEVEN.

Berlin-based artist Karl Holmqvist is the protagonist of several of Tiravanija’s films. In his works that include readings, videos, collages and installations, Holmqvist uses text fragments from very different sources. Their meanings are constantly shifting through repetition and arrangements. He has written his latest book over the last few months on an extended stay in Los Angeles.

At the Gropius Bau, Karl Holmqvist reads on a demo station by Rirkrit Tiravanija. The stage-like sculpture invites people to “demonstrate” something. Tiravanija plays with the different meanings of the term “demonstration” as both a political protest and a presentation of someone’s talent or hobby. For the duration of the exhibition, the demo station provides a space for daily public performances.

Karl Holmqvist lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions include Laxart, Los Angeles, Fridericianum, Kassel, Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva, Indipendenza, Rome (with Klara Liden). He has participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale and Performa, New York.
