Nkisi: When the Storm Comes…

Nkisi produces intense, powerful sonics influenced by ancient Kongo rhythms, rhythmic noise and experimental improvisation. Inspired by the interconnectedness of life with the planetary electromagnetic grid, her performance When the Storm Comes… explores the secrets of vibrational rhythms and ancestral technologies through voice and song: when an elder passed, an ancestral song would be performed to gather the rain’s electricity to a specific area. Triggered by vocal projections, winds would grow into a storm that could cross oceans and continents, travelling along the lines of places where Indigenous people have resided for thousands of years. To ring in the new era at the Gropius Bau, we’ve invited Nkisi to channel the spirits of the past and future.
