In reference to both Fanny Brice of the musical Funny Girl and Romantic music composer Fanny Mendelssohn, The Omer Count: Fanny Girl is a concert performance with an acoustic repertoire ranging from 19th century classical music to Broadway show tunes, pop music, and experimental music, additionally including philosophical recitations. Drawing from various works both past and present, Fanny Girl is an opportunity to experience the diverse musical landscape of Ariel Efraim Ashbel & friends. In the spirit of Fanny Mendelssohn’s Sonntagsmusiken, a musical salon she hosted in 19th century Berlin-Mitte, they invite the audience into the setting and atmosphere of a music room where the work is not fixed but unfolding and in process.
The event is part of TheOmer Count, a citywide cycle of springtime events that explore the potential of Jewish traditions for contemporary dramaturgies.
