Nilita Vachani: Eyes of Stone

Nilita Vachani, Eyes of Stone, 1990, film still

Eyes of Stone (1990) is the story of Shanta, a young girl living in a village in Rajasthan, caught in oppressive societal codes. She is only temporarily excused from life as a mother and wife while possessed by a mysterious apparition, the “dakan”. A powerful eruption of physical, spiritual, linguistic and emotional excess – the film presents Shanta’s possession as a turbulent recasting of the self and the world. Are the possessed truly possessed? Is the apparition always lurking around the corner? Is exorcism healing?

Nilita Vachani is an internationally acclaimed filmmaker and writer. Her first novel, HOMESPUN was published by Other Press in 2008 and won the Foreword’s Choice Fiction award.
