Concert
At the end of the 60s Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra was one of the most politically outspoken jazz groups around. Black and white played together united in their belief in social justice and peace. From the very beginning Carla Bley has been in charge of arranging and conducting the band. Since then, there have been two new editions of the orchestra: in 1982, as put down on the album Ballad of the Fallen, and in 1989, documented on Dreamkeeper.
Following the campaign of the same name by American artists against the politics of the Bush administration, Haden calls his recently released LMO-CD Not In Our Name. In close collaboration with Carla Bley he returns to his old antagonism with a new set of American jazz musicians.
Hüsnü Şenlendirici’s roots go back to the great gypsy-clarinettists. For generations the Senlendiricis have been musicians. Both of Hüsnü’s grandfathers have been playing the unusual combination of trumpet and clarinet, his father Ergün played the trumpet in Okay Temiz’ Magnetic Band. At the age of 16 he left the Istanbul conservatory and likewise joined the Magnetic Band, consequently turning into a much sought after musician.
He has been recording and touring with the German band Embryo and playing traditional belly dance music with the Sulukule ensemble. In 1998 his group Laço Tayfa collaborated with New York’s Brooklyn Funk Essentials and in recent years he has been a member of Mercan Dede’s dervish band. Two years ago Berlin saw him performing with Ilhan Erşahin’s Wonderland band at the Jazz Festival. In September 2005 his first solo CD came out – backed up by his World Ensemble he will be presenting it at the Berlin Jazz Festival.
