The Art of the Trio II

The pianist Giovanni Guidi was born in 1985 in the Umbrian town of Foligno. After hearing him at a summer course for young musicians in Siena, the trumpeter Enrico Rava invited him to join his group. Guidi’s own projects include a quintet and the 10-piece Unknown Rebel Band, but it is with his trio that he has widened his audience most significantly, exploring a supreme lyricism touched with a hint of astringency. The California-born bassist Thomas Morgan is already a young giant of the instrument, noted for his work with Paul Motian, Craig Taborn, Tomasz Stańko and others. João Lobo, born in Lisbon, studied percussion at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague and is a constant source of inventive commentary. The group offers a genuine three-way interplay, a conversation full of wisdom and surprise.
