Aki Takase, a resident of Berlin, returns from her encounter with Ingrid Laubrock for a first meeting with the alto saxophonist Charlotte Greve, who was born in Berlin in 1988 and graduated from the Jazz Institute in 2012 before making her home in Brooklyn. The winner of the JazzBaltica newcomer award in 2010, Greve frequently returns to her native country for dates with the Lisbeth Quartet, themselves winners of the Echo Jazz newcomers prize in 2012. The group also includes the pianist Manuel Schmiedel, Greve’s fellow Brooklyn resident. In the US she leads another quartet called Wood River and has played with the trumpeter Dave Douglas and the saxophonist Donny McCaslin. “Jazzthing” described her music as being shaped by “an aesthetic of distinctive moods and intense emotion.”
