Mary Halvorson is not predictable: She’ll do the opposite of what people say she will do, she’ll turn up in places you wouldn’t expect her to be. Her extraordinary playing, her characteristic sound and her extremely heterogeneous work in highly diverse constellations make her an artist who defies any traditional classification and who resolutely ignores frontiers.

The first performance of the New York guitarist’s residency will be with the trio Thumbscrew and the European premiere of their double album “Theirs” and “Ours”. In this egalitarian trio, the musicians perform at once completely independently and complementing each other: Mary Halvorson with her sharp edge, tight harmonic artfulness, intense inner rhythm and high expressivity, the legendary Michael Formanek with his massive bass sound and his flexible alternation between melodic and anchoring sections, as well as Tomas Fujiwara with his propelling and refined drumming. Relentlessly and imaginatively, they uncover what is essential: “in tight blend, twisty, turny and always on the move.” In their third and most recent double album, the three musicians with their distinguishing dialectic tension have created cover versions of their favourite artists (“Theirs”) as well as original compositions (“Ours”).
