“The Long Now” is a place for the enduring present, a space in which time itself can unfold, where the sense of time can take uncharted paths and get lost. A time bubble, separated, for an unending moment, from the clocked pace of the metropolis. A chronosphere to make space for each and everyone’s proper time.With a duration of 30 hours, “The Long Now” constitutes the monumental closing event of MaerzMusik − Festival for Time Issues 2015. The project consists of concerts, performances, sounds installations, film and electronic live-acts by, amongst others, Morton Feldman, Phill Niblock, Leif Inge, Burkhard von Harder and Pierluigi Billone – a composition in space and time, sheltered by one of Berlin’s most impressive spaces: Kraftwerk Berlin.Visitors are invited to enter this time bubble, to stay overnight, sleeping or otherwise, and surrender to this artistic borderline experience.

For more than three decades, Rirkrit Tiravanija has been expanding the possibilities of what can happen in an exhibition space. In “DAS GL&Uuml;CK IST NICHT IMMER LUSTIG” (Happiness is not always fun), the Gropius Bau presents more than 80 of the artist’s works in which Tiravanija often refers to cultural clichés and politics in Germany.

In “Il Cimento dell’Armonia e dell’Inventione”, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Radouan Mriziga and the Belgian dance company Rosas sound out disconcerting developments in the relationship between human beings and nature in an exploration of Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”. And still, they also find opportunity for contemplation in familiar sounds.

Upcoming Events

The festival commences with an immersive auditory experience, reviving a pivotal moment in the history of new and experimental music through INA grm – Groupe de Recherches Musicales’ Acousmonium. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of François Bayle’s invention, we will showcase compositions for the loudspeaker orchestra by composers such as Beatriz Ferreyra, Eve Aboulkheir, François Bayle and others. EnsembleKollektiv Berlin explores the realm of conscientious listening with works by Helmut Lachenmann as well as Michelle Lou and Ashkan Behzadi. The intergenerational narrative unfolds with Simon Steen-Andersen’s interpretation of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Musik im Bauch” performed by Les Percussions de Strasbourg. In this edition, we will continue our focus from last year on composer and artist Lucia Dlugoszewski: we have curated scores, including some unfinished ones, with Marco Blaauw and Christine Chapman that have been reconstructed by Ensemble Musikfabrik, rebuilt Dlugoszewski’s percussive instruments, and restaged works conducted for dance, performed by Berlin-based dancers in collaboration with Katherine Duke and the Erick Hawkins Company. Spread throughout the city, the series “Topographies of Hearing” features installations and interventions by Christina Kubisch, Jessica Ekomane, Audrey Chen and others. In navigating the uncharted territories of our collective futures, this year’s edition embraces the ongoing processes that are underway rather than fixating on conclusive ideas.We look forward to experiencing MaerzMusik 2024 with you!

MaerzMusik 2024 is positioning itself as an open-ended experience centred on conscientious listening, while also highlighting the constantly evolving tapestry of musical interplay among different generations and movements. With the ensembles, artists, musicians and composers invited, the festival examines the multi-layered potential of music through a programme that dovetails with the performing arts, sound, artistic interventions and more.

MaerzMusik will take place from 21 to 30&nbsp;March 2025 under the artistic direction of Kamila Metwaly. The 24th festival edition will open with the multimedia music theatre production “MELENCOLIA – A Show Against the Indifference of the Universe” by Brigitta Muntendorf and Moritz Lobeck at Haus der Berliner Festspiele. The work, commissioned by the Bregenz Festival and Ensemble Modern, will celebrate its German premiere at MaerzMusik in cooperation with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Immersed in 3D&nbsp;soundscapes, performers from Ensemble Modern and the Apollo Choir of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden take listeners into a deep exploration of enigmatic, melancholic worlds where reality and virtuality are combined on stage.Further multidisciplinary projects as well as current compositions for percussion will be presented over the following nine festival days: the new work “Streik” for ten drumsets by Enno Poppe, “POETICA” by Chaya Czernowin and Steven Schick for Les Percussions de Strasbourg and “Minor Characters” by Jennifer Walshe and Matthew Shlomowitz with Ensemble Nikel. In addition to the New York ensemble Yarn/Wire and the performance duo Nguyễn + Transitory, the programme also includes current works by Mark Barden and Ligia Lewis.Advance ticket sales for „MELENCOLIA“ will start on 14&nbsp;November and for the other programme items in mid-January. The complete festival programme will be published in February.

The international Jazzfest Research Lab&nbsp;welcomes academics and students to take a critical look at the festival’s archive, its programmes, creators, musicians and – last but not least – its myths. In two seminars during the summer semester of 2024, students from the Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Hildesheim have explored the festival’s history from various perspectives. In this film, the participants give a first look at how they dealt with their research subject.

Introducing: Jazzfest Research Lab

To mark its 60th anniversary, Jazzfest Berlin is celebrating the cultural diversity of the neighbouring district of Moabit in collaboration with around 35 official partners and initiatives and with over 350 participants of all ages.&nbsp;In June 2024, interviews were conducted with 20 partners who presented their perspectives, wishes and ideas for the Jazzfest Community Lab Moabit.
