As part of the opening week of Rirkrit Tiravanija’s exhibition DAS GLÜCK IST NICHT IMMER LUSTIG, BauhütteKreuzberg e.V. invites visitors to join them on the artist’s demo station for a personal discussion about urban development and the possibilities of collaboratively shaping the neighbourhood.

As part of Berlin Art Week, the consultation of Bauhütte’s “Anlaufstelle für Bürger*innenbeteiligung” (contact office for citizen participation) will take place once on Rirkirt Tiravanija’s demo station. The stage-like sculpture invites people to “demonstrate” something. Tiravanija plays with the different meanings of the term “demonstration” as both a political protest and a presentation of someone’s talent or hobby. For the duration of the exhibition, the demo station provides a space for daily public performances.

In each Berlin district, there is a contact office which is open to citizens’ concerns and questions about planned and ongoing developments in their neighborhood. Bauhütte Kreuzberg e.V. provides this service for Kreuzberg. The association promotes neighbourhood participation in the Southern Friedrichstadt – in the immediate vicinity of the Gropius Bau. In a weekly consultation hour, called “Anlaufstelle für Bürger*innenbeteiligung” (contact office for citizen participation), residents and visitors are invited to get involved and share their wishes and thoughts on urban development.

The Bauhütte is a container building run by the association of the same name on a 1600 square metre vacant lot in the Southern Friedrichstadt. The area is home to numerous NGOs, initiatives and associations and organises talks as well as cultural events. It also offers a space for projects from the neighbourhood.
