Glorious Percussion. A virtuoso percussion ensemble and a symphony orchestra celebrate a »sound-fest«, with and against one another – like a space trip taken through gleamings and darknesses, through spheres compact, energy-laden, explosive – quiet and calm. Sofia Gubaidulina gains the idea for the work from her thinking about music. The spiritual effect reaches much farther than music.

Keeping his distance from official jubilee celebrations, Shostakovich dedicated his twelfth symphony to Lenin and the October Revolution. A great crescendo – in which a lot of energy is subterraneously accumulated – unloads itself into the finale entitled: Dawn of Humanity. This dawn announces itself symbolically through the salvos of the battleship Aurora – so the people of 1917 hoped. At the end of the Twelfth, its symphonic light shines gloriously – and rotates like a warning light.
