This is the sixth edition of The Long Now, a 30-hour durational project at Kraftwerk Berlin and an invitation to forget time and space and to surrender oneself to a physical and artistic borderline experience.

The Long Now is a place for the continuing present. A space in which time itself can unfurl and senses of time can dilate into as yet uncharted patterns. With a duration of 30 hours, the project invites visitors to detach from the clocked pace of urban life and indulge in this chronosphere. The Long Now is the closing event of MaerzMusik − Festival for Time Issues 2020. Embedded in the monumental setting of Kraftwerk Berlin, concerts, performances, electronic live-acts, sound and video installations form a large-scale composition in time and space. Embracing musical worlds from Andean indigenous music to the musical avant-garde, from minimal and ambient music to experimental electronics and noise, this sixth edition of the event offers sonic and bodily experiences of an exceptional kind. Visitors are welcome to spend the entire duration in the power plant, sleep over, or come and go. Beds will be provided.

And still, they also find opportunity for contemplation in familiar sounds.

The festival commences with an immersive auditory experience, reviving a pivotal moment in the history of new and experimental music through INA grm – Groupe de Recherches Musicales’ Acousmonium. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of François Bayle’s invention, we will showcase compositions for the loudspeaker orchestra by composers such as Beatriz Ferreyra, Eve Aboulkheir, François Bayle and others. EnsembleKollektiv Berlin explores the realm of conscientious listening with works by Helmut Lachenmann as well as Michelle Lou and Ashkan Behzadi. The intergenerational narrative unfolds with Simon Steen-Andersen’s interpretation of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Musik im Bauch” performed by Les Percussions de Strasbourg. In this edition, we will continue our focus from last year on composer and artist Lucia Dlugoszewski: we have curated scores, including some unfinished ones, with Marco Blaauw and Christine Chapman that have been reconstructed by Ensemble Musikfabrik, rebuilt Dlugoszewski’s percussive instruments, and restaged works conducted for dance, performed by Berlin-based dancers in collaboration with Katherine Duke and the Erick Hawkins Company. Spread throughout the city, the series “Topographies of Hearing” features installations and interventions by Christina Kubisch, Jessica Ekomane, Audrey Chen and others. In navigating the uncharted territories of our collective futures, this year’s edition embraces the ongoing processes that are underway rather than fixating on conclusive ideas.We look forward to experiencing MaerzMusik 2024 with you!

MaerzMusik 2024 is positioning itself as an open-ended experience centred on conscientious listening, while also highlighting the constantly evolving tapestry of musical interplay among different generations and movements. MaerzMusik will take place from 21 to 30&nbsp;March 2025 under the artistic direction of Kamila Metwaly. The 24th festival edition will open with the multimedia music theatre production “MELENCOLIA – A Show Against the Indifference of the Universe” by Brigitta Muntendorf and Moritz Lobeck at Haus der Berliner Festspiele. The work, commissioned by the Bregenz Festival and Ensemble Modern, will celebrate its German premiere at MaerzMusik in cooperation with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Immersed in 3D&nbsp;soundscapes, performers from Ensemble Modern and the Apollo Choir of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden take listeners into a deep exploration of enigmatic, melancholic worlds where reality and virtuality are combined on stage.Further multidisciplinary projects as well as current compositions for percussion will be presented over the following nine festival days: the new work “Streik” for ten drumsets by Enno Poppe, “POETICA” by Chaya Czernowin and Steven Schick for Les Percussions de Strasbourg and “Minor Characters” by Jennifer Walshe and Matthew Shlomowitz with Ensemble Nikel. In addition to the New York ensemble Yarn/Wire and the performance duo Nguyễn + Transitory, the programme also includes current works by Mark Barden and Ligia Lewis.Advance ticket sales for „MELENCOLIA“ will start on 14&nbsp;November and for the other programme items in mid-January. The international Jazzfest Research Lab&nbsp;welcomes academics and students to take a critical look at the festival’s archive, its programmes, creators, musicians and – last but not least – its myths. In two seminars during the summer semester of 2024, students from the Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Hildesheim have explored the festival’s history from various perspectives. In this film, the participants give a first look at how they dealt with their research subject.

To mark its 60th anniversary, Jazzfest Berlin is celebrating the cultural diversity of the neighbouring district of Moabit in collaboration with around 35 official partners and initiatives and with over 350 participants of all ages.&nbsp;In June 2024, interviews were conducted with 20 partners who presented their perspectives, wishes and ideas for the Jazzfest Community Lab Moabit. On 26 January, the Theatertreffen’s jury of critics announced their selection of 10 remarkable productions for the 2024 Theatertreffen at a press conference. Our congratulations go to the nominated production teams and all participants! The programme will be published on 5 April.

“Radical Playgrounds”, an art parcours at the Gropius Bau, is spending eleven weeks exploring the differences between the concepts of play as competition and free play. Visitors are invited to walk and climb on the various installations and sculptures, to activate them and to shape the project collectively.
