Staged Reading
Stückemarkt
In “Amsterdam”, Maya Arad Yasur’s protagonist, a pregnant Israeli violinist, sets out to trace the origins of a gas bill from the year 1944, which she found outside her door one morning. In the course of the next 24 hours, she gradually becomes aware of the significance of her own origins and her gender in an increasingly xenophobe and misogynist environment. The story is told by several voices that contradict and complement each other, trying to find a common point of view for their narrative – but can rarely do more than speculate helplessly about how and why these events could have come to pass.
