Political Biographies – workshop with Li Lorian

Li Lorian’s grandmother Shoshana, who was nine years old in the year 1947 and one of thousands of passengers travelling on the ship Exodus to Palestine, only to be sent back to Europe by the British, and who was only able to emigrate to Israel with her family in 1948, is the point of departure for Lorian’s foray through the history of the exodus. “My grandmother also was an illegal immigrant” This is the trajectory leading her from the ship Exodus to the people trying to flee across the Mediterranean Sea, to the Palestinians whose own exodus began with the foundation of the state of Israel. Her family’s experience of flight and displacement, which is the foundation of her lecture performance, provides the emerging pathos with an empirical bedrock: “Do not oppress a foreigner; you yourselves know how it feels to be a foreigner, because you were foreigners in Egypt.”
