Concepts of “Blackness” in Music

Musicians like Sun Ra, Beyoncé and M.I.A. often stage their concepts of ethnicity deliberately and via the media. What are their strategies, how do they perform their criticism of asymmetrical power structures, and how is this criticism continued in the discourse that surrounds them? In this workshop, we will work with short writing tasks, helping us to explore concepts of “blackness” in both an analytical and a creative way.
