“Aalaapi” is about listening: Laurence Dauphinais’ multi-lingual company recounts the life-realities of Indigenous artists and invites us to slow down, to be consciously aware and open for encounters.

“Aalaapi” depicts a marginalised group that is hardly ever given a voice: the Inuit. With great skill, Laurence Dauphinais, radio creator Marie-Laurence Rancourt and the two performers Nancy Saunders and Ulivia Uviluk have designed a quiet and poetic work that uses documentary material to tell the story of Indigenous artists who oscillate between different realities of life: from a large Canadian city to remote places behind the Arctic Circle. “Aalaapi” invites the audience to experience an open encounter with the unknown, pointing beyond any real or imagined boundary.

Stückemarkt-juror Maria Nübling about the performance
In “Aalaapi”, Laurence Dauphinais and her multi-lingual company give us a glimpse into a way of life that we rarely hear about: the life of the Inuit community in Northern Canada. The show provides marginalised voices and stories with a space to be heard and witnessed. Together with her cast, Laurence Dauphinais has created a performance that is captivating in its simplicity and calm and unfolds an incredible poetry in all its pureness. It invites us to pause, to take stock of ourselves, to be patient and ready to listen. “Aalaapi” is Inuktitut for “Be quiet so that you can hear something beautiful”. And that is precisely what it is: The entire performance is a gesture of respectful encounter, calling us to face the world with mindfulness and to identify appreciation of each other as the cornerstone of a solidary practice.
