The Alfred-Kerr-Acting-Award recognises the outstanding achievement by a young actor in one of the productions invited to the Theatertreffen.

In 2022, the juror is actor Valery Tscheplanowa. Her laudatory speech says:

“Samouil Stoyanov, what a lump of precision and grace. He turns Jandl’s clever, sparse sentences into a thoughtful monologue of strength, he sweats the language.”

She says about her work in the context of the Alfred-Kerr-Acting-Award:

“What I look for in the theatre is alertness on stage. In my eyes, alertness can be produced by the most varied forms. A frivolous, laid back approach can achieve this just as well as a slow, concentrated one or audacious mental leaps. At this year’s Theatertreffen I am looking forward to meeting a young generation who I have some questions for. I want to find out what these young people want to preserve, and what they want to replace or forget. I want to see what is in their way and what they want. What are the images they inhabit – and can I recognise and read them? I want to find out whether what happens on stage really has changed as much as it sometimes seems to have done to me, or whether the means at our disposal have simply become more numerous, however, alertness remains the same.”

The Alfred-Kerr-Acting-Award was initiated in 1991 by Judith and Michael Kerr, Berliner Festspiele / Theatertreffen and Pressestiftung Tagesspiegel and recognises the outstanding achievement by a young actor in one of the productions invited to the Theatertreffen. It is handed out at the Theatertreffen’s conclusion.

The award is endowed by Alfred-Kerr-Stiftung.
