Selection 2024

The selection for the Theatertreffen der Jugend 2024 has been made.
Congratulations to the selected ensembles!

In a nationwide competition, 95 ensembles applied for this year’s Theatertreffen der Jugend. The jury has chosen 15 productions for the interim selection, which they have experienced in live viewings. Now the jurors have made the final selection.

The jury’s decision represents the different production contexts in which young theatre art is created: productions from the school context, from youth clubs at state theatres, as well as productions from the independent scene and from community theatres were selected.
Stylistically, the productions in the selection range from musicals and adaptations of classics to collages, activist plays and a martial arts performance. Classical or mythological material is often used to reflect the present and future of society. They are heavily adapted, transferred to the reality of the young theatre makers’ lives and updated using digital communication media such as Instagram or live chats. In terms of content, the ensembles deal with unrequited love, queerness, fluid gender roles, the helplessness of society in the face of an uncertain future and the question of how peace can be achieved. They reflect on social grievances, the pressure to perform, the culture of remembrance and the diversity of our society. In many cases, the ensembles formulate strong demands using activist elements and chants. They also frequently utilise narrative levels of physical performance with choreographies or intensive sport and movement sequences and seek interactive encounters with the audience.
