Marlene Streeruwitz was born in Baden near Vienna. She studied Slav Languages and Art History and began work as a director and writer of stage and radio plays (these plays included “Waikiki Beach”, “New York. New York”, “Ocean Drive”, “Tolmezzo”, “Brahmsplatz” and “Sapporo”). In 1996 she lectured on poetics at Tübingen University. Her major prose works include “Lisa’s Liebe”, “Nachwelt”, “Majakowskiring”, “Jessica, 30”, “Entfernung” and “Der Abend nach dem Begräbnis der besten Freundin”. Her most recent work is the novel “Kreuzungen”, published in 2008. Marlene Streeruwitz has won numerous prizes including the Hermann Hesse Prize and the City of Vienna Prize for Literature (both in 2001), the Walter Hasenclever Literary Prize (2002), the Peter Rosegger Literature Prize and the Droste Prize (both this year).
