Johann König

Johann Köing is a gallerist and founder of the KÖNIG GALERIE in Berlin. He was born in Cologne in 1981 and has been living in Berlin since 2002, where he founded his gallery for contemporary art in the same year. He realised pioneering exhibitions of upcoming and later internationally established artists like Tue Greenfort, Jeppe Hein, Annette Kelm, Michael Sailstorfer or Tatiana Trouvé. Since then, the focus of the approximately 38 artists represented by Johann König has been on cross-media, concept-oriented and spatial approaches.

Since 2003, Johann König has been continually present at major international art fairs like Art Basel in Basel and Miami Beach, Frieze Art Fair in London and New York, Foire international d’art contemporain (FIAC) in Paris and others. Not only there, he has successfully brokered works by his gallery’s artists to a wide range of private and public collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Guggenheim Foundation. The artists he represents show their work in institutional solo shows worldwide and contribute to group shows like documenta, Biennale in Venice, and Berlin Biennale. As a gallerist, Johann König has been included in the “Power-100-list” of the British magazine Art Review every year since 2009. In 2011, Johann König and British artist Helen Marten won the Prix Lafayette for her solo presentation at his fair stall at the Paris art fair FIAC. In 2016, Johann König and his wife Lena König received the Berlin Architecture Award.
