Almuth Berger
Almuth Berger, born 1943 in Tangermünde/Elbe, studied theology at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1961 to 1966 and was a pastor in Magdeburg and Berlin from 1976 to 1990. She co-founded peace groups and and participated in peace work at the Federation of Protestant Churches and is co-founder of the initiative group “Rejection of the practice and the principle of demarcation” and of the citizen movement “Democracy now”. In 1988, she co-founded one of the first non-governmental meeting centres for foreigners and residents called “Cabana”. She was a delegate of the working group “Foreigners” at the Central Round Table of the GDR. At the suggestion of the Round Table, she was appointed State Secretary and Commissioner for Foreigners at the Council of Ministers of the GDR on 1 March 1990, and Commissioner for Foreigners of the State of Brandenburg from April 1991 to November 2003.
