Majid Derakhshāni

Born in 1957 in the northern Iranian province of Sangesar, Majid Derakhshāni is one of the most important musicians in his country. He studied art, string instruments and composition in Tehran, produced over 34 albums and also played at major festivals outside Iran. He founded the internationally successful Shahnāz Ensemble, as well as a music centre for Persian music in Cologne. Derakhshāni bears the venerable title of “Ostād”, which distinguishes him as a master of his instrument. In his compositions, he focuses on cultivating classical Persian music while mixing it with European influences. Since he was banned from entering and working in Iran because of his collaboration with female musicians, who are not allowed to perform in public, he now lives in Hamburg.
