Maria Ursprung, born in Solothurn, is writing for theatre and radio plays and directing plays and staged concerts. She studied Theatre Studies at the University of Bern and at Freie Universität Berlin. Later she studied Literary Writing at the Swiss Literature Institute. 2008/2009 she was an assistant dramaturg and guest dramaturg at Theater Basel, later assistant director at Thalia Theater in Hamburg, where she produced her first own works as a director. In addition to staging theatre works, Maria Ursprung also directs scenic concerts with orchestras or music ensembles. The staged concert “Bye Bye Beethoven”, which attempts to break up anachronistic structures in the prevailing concert tradition, was invited to the Ojai Music Festival in Ojai and Berkeley and to Aldeburgh in 2018. Ursprung’s play “Schleifpunkt” has been invited to the Autorentheatertage 2020 at Deutsches Theater Berlin and was first staged by Schauspielhaus Graz. From 2022/23 she will be co-director of the independent production company Theater Marie in Switzerland, which focuses on new drama.
