Michael Jarrell
Composer Michael Jarrell was born in Geneva in 1958. Following his studies at the conservatory in his hometown and master classes in Tanglewood/Massachusetts, he completed his training with Klaus Huber in Freiburg/Breisgau. Michael Jarrell was a grant recipient at the Villa Medici Rom and the Cité international des Arts in Paris, where he also attended IRCAM courses. In 1993 he was appointed professor for composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Michael Jarrell sounds out the tonal possibilities of the instruments in chamber music works and concertante compositions. Modern German literature inspires him in the music theatre he produces: “Cassandre”, based on the novel by Christa Wolff, premiered in 1994 in Paris; “Galilei”, based on a work by Bertolt Brecht, premiered in 2006 in Geneva; and “le père”, which was based on a work by Heiner Müller, premiered in 2010 in Schwetzingen.
