Konzerthausorchester Berlin

In more than 100 concerts per season, the Konzerthaus Orchestra delights its audience in its concert hall on Gendarmenmarkt. Founded in 1952 as the Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester, it was renamed the Konzerthausorchester Berlin in 2006. Since the season 2019/20 Christoph Eschenbach holds the position of Chief Conductor. His predecessor Iván Fischer shaped the Konzerthausorchester from 2012 to 2018 and is since still strongly connected as their Honorary Conductor. The First Guest Conductor has been Juraj Valčuha since 2017. Over the last few years, it has enhanced its profile through a key concern: bringing music closer to the audience. The musicians use newly developed formats, such as the Mozart Matinee with musical childcare, the hugely popular “Mittendrin – Right in the Middle”, where the audience sits directly next to orchestral musicians, and the #klangberlins clips, which have been clicked and shared millions of times in social media. For this overall approach, the Konzerthausorchester won the “Innovative Orchestra 2017”, awarded for the first time by the German Orchestra Foundation. The jury’s decision was motivated by “an orchestra …, that defines itself strongly through its connection to its city, Berlin. The musicians want to be all Berliners’ orchestra and allow a versatile approach to classical music, as well as a broad cultural participation.”
