Barbara Frey, born 1963 in Basel, studied German Language and Philosophy in Zurich and played as a drummer in various Swiss bands. As a musician and assistant director, she joined Theater Basel in 1988 (Direction: Frank Baumbauer). After working at the Neumarkt Theatre Zurich, the National Theatre Mannheim and the Deutsches SchauSpielHaus Hamburg, Barbara Frey was in-house director at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz Berlin (1999 to 2001) and at Deutsches Theater Berlin (2005 to 2008). She has repeatedly directed at the Theater Basel, the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel in Munich (“Onkel Wanja” was invited to the Theatertreffen in 2004), the Burgtheater in Vienna and the Salzburg Festival, as well as the Bavarian State Opera and the Semperoper Dresden. From 2009/10 to 2018/19 Barbara Frey was artistic director of the Schauspielhaus Zurich. For the seasons 2021 to 2023, Barbara Frey will take over as artistic director of the Ruhrtriennale.
Since 2006, Frey worked regularly at Burgtheater in Vienna. Previous productions include “Schöne Bescherungen” (2018), “Ein europäisches Abendmahl” (2017), “Die Affäre Rue de Lourcine“ (2015), “Liliom” (2013), “Der ideale Mann” (2011).
