Sina Saberi

Choreograf, Performer

Choreographer, performer – Tehran, Iran
Participant International Forum 2020/2021

Born in 1988 in Tehran and coming from a background of literature, language teaching and communication, Sina Saberi is an independent performer and theatre maker, who came to the performing arts in 2012. He helped to establish and co-founded an independent dance collective called MaHa alongside seven other young artists in Tehran. This collective has had several dance initiatives in Iran, including Iran’s first ‘body movement’ festival in March 2016. His own artistic journey is strongly inspired by the urgency of physical expression as a means for cultural development. In terms of practice, Sina Saberi is focused on the (minimum) 40-year gap that the art form of dance has faced in Iran and wonders where Iranian contemporary dance might be today. Dealing with questions of identity rising out of a very particular context of a post-Islamic Republic, he looks at elements within the Iranian culture and how they could still be relevant today within his and the broader context. In 2017 he founded Kahkeshān, a community-based organisation dedicated to dance research and creation. He also works as an organiser in various projects within the Iranian dance community.
