Javier Zafra first studied bassoon and harmony at the Oscar Esplà Conservatory in his hometown of Alicante. In 1996, he moved to Holland to specialise in playing the baroque bassoon with Donna Agrell at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and to take Peter van Heyguen’s chamber music class. In 1997, three years before completing his training, he became a member of the European Union Baroque Orchestra (EUBO), then conducted by Ton Koopman. He has also played with Anima Eterna, the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges and the Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla. Javier Zafras is particularly interested in chamber music, to which he devotes himself as a member of the Amsterdam wind sextet Nachtmusique, among others. He is regularly invited as principal bassoonist to the Hokutopia Foundation Festival in Tokyo. Javier Zafra has been a member of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra since 1999.
