Philipp Preuss

Philipp Preuss, born in 1974 in Bregenz, grew up in Vienna, studied directing and acting at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. He has been working as a freelance director, author and visual artist since 2001. His productions have been seen at the Theater Dortmund, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Residenztheater in Munich, Volkstheater in Vienna, Deutsches Theater Berlin and Schaubühne in Berlin, among others. In 2005 he was invited to the Radikal jung festival. As a visual artist, Preuss has been questioning the demarcation between visual art and theatre with artist avatars since 2001. Exhibitions and performances have been shown at Künstlerhaus Bregenz, the Museum für moderne Kunst (MMK) in Frankfurt am Main and at Manifesta 11 in Zurich in 2016, among others. Preuss is on the artistic board of the Theater an der Ruhr in Mülheim, where he most recently directed “Europa oder die Träume des Dritten Reichs”, based on Lars von Trier and Charlotte Beradt. For the Bayreuth Festival in 2019, he staged the world premiere of Feridun Zaimoglu’s and Günter Senkel’s “Siegfried”. He has been in-house director at Schauspiel Leipzig since the 2015/16 season and most recently staged "Prinz Friedrich von Homburg" by Heinrich von Kleist (invited to the Sächsisches Theatertreffen 2020) as well as the world premiere of “beach house” by Dorian Brunz for the Autor:innentheatertage Berlin 2020. In spring 2020, after the interruption of rehearsals for Kafka’s “Das Schloss” due to the pandemic, the Zoom project “k.” based on texts by Franz Kafka, and finally “Das Schloss” at the end of January 2022. In 2023 Philipp Preuss is invited to the Theatertreffen with his production of “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare at the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau.
