Cymin Samawatie © Silke Weinsheimer
Cymin Samawatie works as a conductor, composer, singer and pianist. She studied classical percussion, piano and singing at the Hanover University of Music and Theatre and jazz singing at the Berlin University of the Arts. Witty, expressive and with a great love of experimentation, she interweaves global instrumentation and musical traditions with urban live electronics, multilingual poetry and free improvisation in her trans-traditional version of contemporary music.
With her quartet Cyminology, she combines chamber music jazz with Persian poetry. In 2013, together with Ketan Bhatti, she founded the Trickster Orchestra, with which they present a new form of contemporary art music as an expression of a diverse society. Their artistic work has been honoured with the Berlin Jazz Prize, the Tonali Award and the German Music Writers' Prize, among others. Their recordings have been released on the ECM Records label since 2009.
