
Wolfgang Mitterer was born in 1958 in Tirol. He studied the organ and composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna as well as electroacoustics in Stockholm. Various grants have led him to Rome and Berlin. Today he teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. His works contain multilayered elements, from traditional instrumental sounds through concrete day-to-day noises to advanced electronics.
Wolfgang Mitterer innovatively synthesizes influences from the fields of improvisation, jazz, new music, classical and pop. His music theatre is inspired by various historic and literary sources, from ancient Egyptian Books of the Dead to Grimm’s fairytales. He frequently does free improvisation at international jazz festivals.
