Akanchha Karki is a theatre director and actor with a background in mental health. She runs Katha Ghera, a Kathmandu based theatre collective. She has directed several plays, including the Nepali rendition of “The Vagina Monologues”, “Private is Political”, “Line”, “The Giving Tree”, “Harek Babal Kura”, an adaptation of “Animal Farm” and others.
She is also an aspiring filmmaker. As the recipient of the British Council’s Gender Film Grant, she directed her debut short film “Sanai”.
Her work is mental health-informed, gender sensitive and social justice-oriented. She believes in questioning problematic structures, unlearning internalised prejudices and facilitating difficult conversations that allow room for empathy and healing. Her work is often fuelled by outrage or a lack of closure, and she hopes to find answers through the process of creating.
