Biliana Voutchkova is an interdisciplinary artist who works as a vioinst, a so-called composer-performer, improviser and curator. The term composer-performer refers to the practice of performing music that the performer has composed themselves on instruments especially made for this purpose or with the help of specific instrumental techniques that result in an individual artistic languages that diverges from the proscribed paths. In her diverse practice, Voutchkova conducts research into forms of spontaneity and intuitive resonance for which she draws upon the art of listening, her early education in classical music and years of experiences as a contemporary artist and performer. Her work covers a broad spectrum of sound, visuality and movement and includes concert performances with improvisation, contemporary composition and site-specific works, exhibitions, long-term multidisciplinary performances, audio-visual works and installation formats that place a focus on the connection between the interior world and sound space.
Voutchkova lives in Berlin and works as a soloist, with the Voutchkova/Thieke duo and with the trio Jane in Ether as well as with renowned ensembles such as the Splitter Orchester and the Trickster Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop and many others. She is the founder and curator of the DARA String Festival, an artist of the SHAPE+ Plattform for 2022/2023 and was recently the recipient of the German Residency stipend in the La Cité des arts in Paris and Villa Aurora in Los Angeles.
