Nanni Vapaavuori is a Finnish lighting designer with a background as an interior architect. Her artistic work has spanned contemporary dance, contemporary music, performance art, new circus and installation in fourteen countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. In her practice as a lighting designer Vapaavuori combines installation and performing arts in relation to the space. Her approach to lighting design is both concrete and tactile, working in direct hands-on collaboration with the materials. Vapaavuori invites the surrounding space to participate in the artistic practice of creation. She strives for collaboration between different artistic disciplines and is always actively involved in taking works to alternative spaces. Currently Vapaavuori is working on her artistic doctorate on the material dimensions of light, in the Performing Arts Research Centre, University of the Arts Helsinki.
