Barbara Bürk was born in Cologne in 1965. She studied Directing at Theaterakademie Ulm and began working as an actress. From 1995 to 1998 she was an assistant director Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, working with directors such as Frank Castorf, Christoph Marthaler, Johann Kresnik and Dimiter Gotscheff. Her first own production for Deutsches Schauspielhaus was the German premiere of “Pereira Maintains” (1998), adapted from the novel by Antonio Tabucchi. Productions a.o. for the Theaterhaus Stuttgart, Theater Basel, Schauspiel Hannover and Staatsschauspiel Dresden followed. In 2005 her staging of “Hotel Paraiso” by Lutz Hübner, with whom she has a fruitful working relationship, was invited to the Theatertreffen. Her staging of Hübner’s play “Geisterfahrer” was invited to the Mülheimer Theatertage in 2009. In 2012 she received the theatre prize »Der Faust« for her adaptation and directing of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” at Junges Schauspielhaus Hamburg. “Effi Briest – although with a different text and a different melody” at the Berlin Theatertreffen 2016 will be the second work of Barbara Bürk to be presented at this festival.
