Antú Romero Nunes

Antú Romero Nunes, born in Tübingen in 1983, is Portuguese and Chilean. He gathered his first experiences working in the theatre at Theater Lindenhof. In Chile, he worked as assistant director for theatre and film. He graduated from the Directing course at Berlin’s Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch. His diploma production “Der Geisterseher”, based on Friedrich Schiller, was invited to the 2010 Radikal jung festival. Other invitations followed.

Antú Romero Nunes was chosen as Emerging Director of the year 2010 by the critics’ poll of the magazine Theater heute for his production “Das Prinzip Meese”. From 2010 to 2013, he was director-in-residence at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. He received the 2011 Kurt-Hübner-Directing-Award for “Rocco und seine Brüder” and his staging of “Die Räuber” was awarded the Friedrich-Luft-Prize. In 2014, he directed his first opera at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Other opera productions followed at Komische Oper Berlin and the Grand Théâtre de Genève. He was invited to present “Don Giovanni. Letzte Party”, based on Mozart/Da Ponte at the Festival d’Avignon; his production of “Die Odyssee – Eine Irrfahrt nach Homer” was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2018 and “Ein Sommernachtstraum” received an invitation to the 2023 edition of the festival.

His productions have been presented at numerous international festivals in countries including China, Chile, Mexico and France. From 2014 to 2019, Antú Romero Nunes was director-in-residence at Hamburg’s Thalia Theater. He has created several shows at Schauspiel Frankfurt, Berliner Ensemble, Schauspielhaus Zürich and Burgtheater in Vienna.
