Ty Bouque

Ty Bouque writes about opera: its slippery histories, its sensual bodies and the work of mourning for a dead genre. A frequent contributor on issues of contemporary music, their writing can be found in VAN Magazine, TEMPO, Opera News, in the liners of Huddersfield Contemporary Records, in a book from Lyrebird Press, and, less formally, on Substack at Preposterous Reading. 

Bouque sings as one-fourth of the new music quartet Loadbang, as well as in solo and ensemble settings around the world. Their relationship to sound and the resonant body is explicitly queer, luminous and introspective, barren and vulnerable. Experiences of submission, infection and sexuality are particularly informative to their sound work. They maintain close collaborative relationships with several composers, including Timothy McCormack, Michael Finnissy and Kelley Sheehan.

Raised in Detroit, they now live in Chicago, where they are pursuing a PhD in Music History at the University of Chicago.
