Vijay Prashad

Vijay Prashad, born in Kolkata, India in 1967, is a Marxist historian and journalist. He is the Director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, a movement-driven research institution based in Argentina, Brazil, India and South Africa. He is the Chief Editor of LeftWord Books, a twenty-year old Marxist publishing house which is based in New Delhi (India). Vijay is the Chief Correspondent for “Globetrotter” (a project of the Independent Media Institute) and writes a regular column for “Frontline” (India) and “BirGün” (Turkey). He is a regular contributor to the television channels Newsclick (India) and The Real News Network (USA). For these publications, he has reported from around the world – from West Asia to North Africa, from South Asia to South America. For his reporting in conflict zones, he was asked to deliver the Nadim Makdisi Memorial Lecture (2018) in Beirut, Lebanon. He has written a two-volume history of the post-colonial world – “The Darker Nations: A People’s History of the Third World” (2007) and “The Poorer Nations: A Possible History of the Global South” (2013). These are amongst the twenty-five books he has authored, and the twenty books that he has edited. Amongst the latter is his volume “Lenin: Selected Writings” (in a single volume). He has appeared in two films, “Shadow World” (2016) and “Two Meetings and a Funeral” (2017). He is the recipient of the Muzaffar Ahmad Memorial Prize (2009) and the Franz Fanon Outstanding Achievement Award from the Caribbean Philosophy Association (2019).
