Jan Friedrich was born in Lutherstadt Eisleben in 1992. He studied contemporary puppetry at the Ernst Busch University of Theatre Arts Berlin and was a fellow at Literarisches Colloquium Berlin. He works as a freelance author, set and costume designer, and director. His plays have been premiered at Schauspiel Hannover and Deutsches Theater Berlin and he has staged productions at Staatstheater Kassel, Schauspiel Hannover, Staatstheater Mainz, Schauspiel Dortmund, Theater Magdeburg, Schauburg München and Theater Oberhausen. His production of Goethe’s “FAUST” was nominated for the German Theatre Prize DER FAUST in 2017; his production of “Frühlings Erwachen (Spring Awakening)”, created at Munich’s Schauburg, was invited to the festival Augenblick mal! in Berlin in 2019; his production of “Hedda Gabler” at Schauspiel Dortmund received the award of the journey of critics by the association “Dortmunder für ihr Schauspiel”, and his staging of “Bernarda Albas Haus (The House of Bernarda Alba)” in Oberhausen received the Günther-Büch-Nachwuchspreis. In 2023, his “Woyzeck”-production from Magdeburg was invited to the festival Radikal jung at Münchner Volkstheater, and in 2025, his “Blutbuch”-production from Magdeburg was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen.
