Ute Wassermann

Ute Wassermann is an experimental singer, composer-performer and improviser. She performs regularly at festivals and venues throughout Europe, Australia, Mexico, Brazil, Asia and USA. At the core of her research is an ongoing and uncompromised exploration of her voice. Ute Wassermann´s otherworldly singing transcends the human voice. Her sound language consists of multidimensional sculptural sounds oscillating between electronic, animalistic, inorganic and human qualities. Furthermore, she extends and alienates the voice with bird whistles, lo-fi electronics, resonators, objects, field recordings and different types of microphones. Her performances engage with everyday objects or self-invented instruments for voice which can take shape as acoustic costumes. Over the years she has developed an ever-growing catalogue of multifaceted vocal expressions which has inspired improvisers and composers all over the world. She is a member of bands like Speak Easy (with Phil Minton, Thomas Lehn, Martin Blume), MUT (Thomas Rohrer, Michael Vorfeld), N.E.W. (with Sabine Ercklentz, Andrea Neumann), Radio Tweets (with Birgit Ulher), Tree 23 (with Joke Lanz) or PRAED Orchestra. She performs with musicians like John Russel, Raed Yassin, Sabine Vogel, Mazen Kerbaj, Michael Thieke, Andrea Parkins, Magda Mayas, Lotte Anker, Isabelle Duthoit, Jaap Blonk, Michael Zerang and many others.

As an interpreter she has premiered numerous compositions especially written for her voice, for example by Richard Barrett, Henning Christiansen, Chaya Czernowin, Hans-Joachim Hespos, Matthias Kaul, Karen Power, Alejandro Romero Anaya, Sam Salem. She has received commissions for compositions by Ryogoku Art Festival Japan, WDR, University of Amsterdam, Poetica Sonora Mexico City, Transart Festival Bolzano, Dystopie Sound Art Festival, Maulwerker, Distractfold Ensemble, Ruhrtriennale, MaerzMusik.
