John Cage

No other 20th century composer has expanded and changed the concept of music as an art to the extent that John Cage (1912 – 1992) has. Starting in the 1950s, he created a kind of music in his work in which the design intent of the composer is only visible in the fundamental conception of a work. He is denied access to the sounding events themselves and they cannot be classified into a concept but stand for themselves. In doing so, Cage has had an influence on the arts that stretches far beyond the field of music. His work has triggered significant controversy and has met with fundamental rejection as well as passionate recognition.
