Enno Poppe

Enno Poppe is one of Germany’s leading composers. He studied Conducting and Composition at the Berlin University of the Arts, where his teachers included Friedrich Goldmann and Gösta Neuwirth. This was followed by advanced studies in the fields of sound synthesis and algorithmic composition at TU Berlin and the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe. As a conductor, Enno Poppe makes regular concert appearances with Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Musikfabrik and Ensemble Resonanz as well as with numerous international orchestras. He has been a member and conductor of ensemble mosaik since 1998. Enno Poppe has taught Composition at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin, at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music and at the impuls Academy (Graz).

Enno Poppe has received commissions for compositions from ensembles throughout Europe and beyond, from orchestras including the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the WDR Sinfonieorchester, and also from festivals including the Donaueschinger Musiktage, the Salzburg Festival, musica viva (Munich), Ultraschall Berlin, MaerzMusik (Berlin), Eclat (Stuttgart) and the Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik.

Enno Poppe’s works have been performed by quartets such as the Arditti Quartet and the Kairos Quartet, by conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Susanna Mälkki, Emilio Pomàrico and Peter Rundel, and by orchestras such as the SWR Symphonieorchester, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie. The ensembles that regularly perform his music include Ensemble intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, the London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Resonanz, Klangforum Wien, ensemble mosaik, Ensemble Contrechamps, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Ensemble 2e2m, the SWR Vokalensemble and the Neue Vocalsolisten.

Enno Poppe is a member of the Akademie der Künste Berlin (since 2008), the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of the Sciences, Humanities and the Arts (since 2009) and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts (since 2010).

He has lived and worked in Berlin since 1990.
