Yael Ronen was born in Jerusalem in 1976. She is an author and director for theatre and film/television. She studied playwriting at HB Studio in New York and directing at the Hakibbutzim Seminar in Tel Aviv. There she also directed her first productions, including at the Habima Theatre. Ronen’s international breakthrough came with “Third Generation”, a co-production between the Schaubühne, the Habima Theatre and the Ruhrtriennale in 2010 featuring actors from Germany, Israel and Palestine. From 2015 to 2023, she was in-house director at the Maxim Gorki Theater, including for “Common Ground”, “Roma Armee”, “The Situation” and “Slippery Slope. Almost a Musical”, with music by Shlomi Shaban. Ronen’s work has been invited to the Theatertreffen four times to date, most recently in 2024. She is also a two-time NESTROY Award winner, has been invited to Mülheimer Theatertage several times and was awarded the Europe Prize for Theatrical Realities. Ronen has also worked at the Volkstheater Wien, Münchner Kammerspiele and Thalia Theater Hamburg, among others.
