Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh
Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh ist eine taiwanesisch-australische Komponistin, die sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen zeitgenössischer klassischer und experimenteller Musik bewegt. Sie erweitert akustische instrumentale Möglichkeiten um elektronische Mittel, etwa in Live-Verarbeitungen und räumlichen Audio-Choreografien. Zuletzt konzentrierte sie sich in ihren Kompositionen darauf, immersive körperliche Erfahrungen zu schaffen, die eine tiefere Auseinandersetzung mit verkörperter Erinnerung und der Entwicklung des Selbst anregen, insbesondere unter dem Aspekt von Macht und Erwartungen, auf Basis dessen Weiblichkeit geprägt, aufgelöst und wiederhergestellt wird.
Hsiehs Musik wurde international bei Veranstaltungen wie dem Beijing Modern Music Festival, dem Metropolis New Music Festival, dem OzAsia Festival, der WasteLAnd-Konzertreihe und der Ausstellung „Melbourne Now“ der National Gallery of Victoria präsentiert. Zuletzt erhielt Hsieh Aufträge unter anderem von Symphony Services Australia, vom Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra und Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Ihre Werke wurden neben vielen anderen auch von Ensembles wie dem BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, dem UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, dem Canberra Symphony Orchestra, dem Ulysses Ensemble und dem Mivos Quartet aufgeführt.
Sie hat mehrere Preise und Auszeichnungen erhalten, darunter den APRA (Australian Performance Rights Association) Art Music Fund 2017, den Dorian Le Gallienne Composition Award sowie Stipendien von New Music USA, dem Australian Cultural Fund und dem Australian Council of the Arts.
Hsieh schloss ihr Bachelor- und Masterstudium an der University of Melbourne ab und promovierte an der University of California San Diego. Derzeit ist sie außerordentliche Professorin für elektronische Musikkomposition an der Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh is a Taiwanese-Australian composer whose work situates in the intersection of contemporary classical and experimental music. She is interested in expanding acoustic instrumental capabilities using electronic means, which often manifest in ways of live processing and spatial audio choreography. Her recent compositions focus on creating immersive physical experiences that delve into deeper inquiries of embodied memories and the formation of selfhood, particularly the axis of power and expectations upon which womanhood is shaped, disintegrated and reconstituted.
Hsieh’s music has been presented internationally at events such as Beijing Modern Music Festival, Metropolis New Music Festival, OzAsia Festival, WasteLAnd concert series, The National Gallery of Victoria “Melbourne Now” exhibition, among others. Some recent commissions include Symphony Services Australia, Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Her works have also been performed by ensembles including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Ulysses Ensemble, Mivos Quartet, and many others.
She has been a recipient of several awards and honours such as the 2017 APRA (Australian Performance Rights Association) Art Music Fund, the Dorian Le Gallienne Composition Award, as well as support from New Music USA, Australian Cultural Fund and the Australian Council of the Arts grants, among others.
Hsieh completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Melbourne and her doctorate degree from the University of California San Diego. She is currently an Associate Professor in electronic music composition at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
