
Florian Schmidt, born in 1975, is a city sociologist and project developer, urban activist and politician. He studied sociology, art history and economics in Hamburg, Berlin and Barcelona. Since late 2016, Florian Schmidt has been the Baustadtrat (Councillor for Construction) in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, Berlin. In 2011 he co-founded the Stadt Neudenken initiative that he has coordinated ever since. From 2014 to 2016, Florian Schmidt was the commissioner for the bbk berlin’s studio programme. In autumn 2015 he co-founded the ‘Haus der Statistik’ initiative, of which he is also the spokesman. As the studio commissioner, he founded the initiative Art City Lab for the construction of new art ateliers together with Raumlabor Berlin in spring 2016 which will develop affordable working spaces together with artists’ groups. In 2009 he founded the project office Kreativquartier Südliche Friedrichstadt, which initiated the first draft procedures of Berlin’s property policy and which is accompanying this together with the project space Bauhütte Südliche Friedrichstadt. From 2007 to 2010 he coordinated the Berliner Kunsthalle initiative.
