Matthias Nebel was born in Munich in 1984. He studied Set Design at the Berlin University of the Arts. Following this, he joined Deutsches SchauSpielHaus Hamburg as a set design assistant in 2010/11. Since 2011, he has been living in Berlin and working as a free-lance set and costume designer.
He works in drama (Schauspielhaus Zürich, Schauspiel Köln, Theater Bonn, Theater Leipzig, Staatstheater Kassel, Staatstheater Braunschweig, Oldenburgisches Staatstheater and Münchner Volkstheater), at opera houses in Bremen and Darmstadt and in contemporary dance (SOPHIENSÆLE, HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Kampnagel). His productions with Laurent Chétouane, including “Das Erdbeben in Chili” at Schauspiel Köln in 2012, have been of particular importance to him. Since 2013, he has worked regularly with Sebastian Kreyer, including “Der neue Himmel” at Schauspielhaus Zürich (2015) with a premiere at Deutsches Theater Berlin as part of Autorentheatertage, and he has been working closely with Mirja Biel since 2017, for example “Medea” at Staatstheater Oldenburg (2019) and “Julia and Romeo” at Theater St Gallen (2021).
